Opening a Small School:

In 2006, Matt was selected to open a Transfer School in New York City.  During the two years between the selection and the day the School opened, Matt attended the New York City Leadership Academy, earning a Master's degree in School Leadership.  Simultaneously, Matt attended New York City's New School Intensive, where he planned every aspect of the School for and approval by the New York City Department of Education.  Aspirations High School opened in 2008 and was led by Matt for its inaugural three years.

City-Wide Instructional Expectations Conference:

In 2013, Matt was working at the Central Office of New York City's Department of Education as a City-Wide Director of Literacy.  The Office of Achievement Resources was charged with hosting a meeting with each principal in New York City to share the newly developed City-Wide Instructional Expectations.  Matt was an essential factor in planning the logistics for a series of meetings that would include collaboration between several offices with different priorities and agendas.  Matt was also instrumental in the development of the content for the meetings which would eventually be full day sessions for all of New York City's 18,000 principals facilitated by senior leadership from the Chancellor's Office.

Annual Principal CONFERENCE

From 2014-16 Matt planned the Chancellor's Principal Meeting for all of New York City’s principals and school support staff as well as stakeholders from city government as well as local government.   This five thousand person meeting designed to set the policy agenda for the coming school year.   As the point person for the conference, Matt had to work with senior leadership at the Central Office to create a cohesive message from multiple offices, develop coherent content as well as manage all the logistics of a five thousand-person full day meeting.

Chief of Staff for the Bronx Division of Teaching and Learning:

In 2016, Matt Joined the newly opened Field Support Center in the Bronx inaugurated as the new chancellor reimagined and aligned school support for all of New York City.  In his role, Matt endeavored to create systems and structures to support professional learning for the Borough.  Matt shared leadership of a team of 40 Instructional Leads who provided expertise to schools in all academic areas.  This team served to both support schools and to codify the practices for the rest of the organization to follow as the organization grew.

Dean of Humanities: 

In 2019, after 21 years in the Department of Education, Matt accepted the position of Dean of Humanities at @Broome Street Academy Charter High School, a charter school that opened in partnership with The Door in 2011.  In this role, Matt is responsible for academics and the supervision of the teaching staff for a school that serves some of the cities’ most vulnerable children.
